In the last few years, the use of smartphones has been on the rise. People remain busy with these devices for hours together. In the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, even children got addicted to smartphones. They were using phones for online classes and other work but too much of use is causing harm to their health.

As a result of this, youngsters, including adolescents, are becoming more vulnerable to a condition called tech neck. Earlier, kids did not face this complication but more such cases are being reported now.

According to a report in the Nav Bharat Times, New York-based plastic surgeon Dr Richard Westreich is of the opinion that children are complaining of numbness in their hands due to an excessive use of smartphones. It is causing harm to their body as they have pain in the neck, head, shoulders and the back, he adds. Twenty percent of the cases being reported daily are of children. Previously, this condition used to affect only those adults who used to work on computers for hours but now youngsters are also facing this problem. There has been a marked reduction in physical activity among children and they are gaining more weight.

Sitting in same posture adds to problem

According to doctors, children remain in the same posture for hours while using smartphones. It affects their body muscles and joints. Swelling also occurs in the skull area due to an exertion in the neck muscles. If not treated on time, the condition keeps aggravating with time and can turn serious eventually. This may even cause a bent head and change the posture of shoulders. Moreover, one might not feel comfortable while walking due to the same.

Preventive measures against tech neck

· Fix the time for the use of smartphone for children

· Do not let them kill time by using smartphones and instead ask them to do physical activities

· Do not give smartphone to kids in the night

· If your kid has pain in the neck, back or hands, immediately consult a doctor
