Batwing Actor’s New Series Combines Combat Sports and Video Games

CBR presents an exclusive preview of Tower #1, the first chapter in a new sci-fi comic book series co-written by Batwoman star Camrus Johnson.

Batwing actor Camrus Johnson’s new comic book series Tower is about to launch and promises readers a unique blend of science fiction, combat sports and video games.

CBR has the exclusive preview of Tower #1, courtesy of publisher A Wave Blue World. The issue was produced by Johnson and co-writer Kelsey Barnhart, artist ChrisCross, colorist Andrew Dalhouse and letterer Deron Bennett, with a cover by ChrisCross and Dalhouse. A Wave Blue World’s official synopsis for Tower #1 reads: “Real-life contestants battle it out in a video game-style competition to reach the top of the Tower! Casandra, Kimi and Mac are thrust into a brutal (and seemingly virtual) world where danger lies in wait around every corner. With no time to solve the mystery of where they are or why they’re here, they’ll have to toughen up and join forces if they intend to survive, using their individualized weapons and animal assistants to outsmart deadly traps and ambushes. But loyalties will be tested, as only one (or one team!) can become the ultimate champion!”

Johnson, who portrayed Luke Fox/Batwing on The CW’s Batwoman for three seasons, recently discussed the genesis of Tower while promoting the comic book’s debut. “I came up with the concept of this comic close to a decade ago, and a few years after that, Kelsey became my friend and collaborator on it, so to see those out there excited to read it now makes the kid in me with a story and no idea how to share it, very, very excited.” Barnhart echoed Johnson’s sentiments, describing Tower as “a real passion project” for the pair.

Johnson added that Tower gave him the opportunity to explore a video game-type world from a fresh perspective. “As a video game lover, I’ve always wished that I could just be inside the games themselves, completely surrounded by these new worlds and all of the challenges they come with,” he said. “In Tower, we do just that, with Issue #1 showing just how scary it is to be dropped right into the middle of the action with no recollection of how you got there, given only the simple rules, and teaming up with strangers to up your chances of survival in a fight to stay alive.”

Tower isn’t Johnson’s first foray into the world of comics, however, it is his first collaboration with ChrisCross. An acclaimed artist who first rose to prominence via his contributions to DC’s landmark Milestone imprint, ChrisCross has worked for major publishers in both the US and internationally.

Tower #1 goes on sale Feb. 22, 2023, and retails for $4.99.
