Zhiyun Molus G60 is a compact and portable cube-shaped light that is small enough to fit in my hand as you can see in my photos.
Zhiyun G60 everyday use
As the name suggests, Molus G60 has got 60w of power to deliver sufficient constant brightness in a range of situations such as studio shoots and talking to the camera.
The light uses LED COB technology. COB stands for chip on board.
A built-in does a brilliant job of keeping it cool and doing so quietly, and this means the light provides consistent illumination without any flickering.
I’ve used the lamp for hours on end and it never overheats or requires cooling down periods. The fan uses what’s called the DynaVort Cooling System which dissipates the heat with stability to deliver an operating temperature of around 10 to 40 degrees.
Molus G60 has a colour temperature range of 2700K-6500K.
The illuminance reaches 2,367 Luz and this is at 6500K at 100 percent brightness.
The light’s high Color Rendering Index (CRI) rating of 96 percent means colours appear vivid and accurate. (It also has a Television Lighting Consistency Index rating on 97 percent.)
The light’s brightness and colour temperature can be tweaked with the two physical dials on the rear of the device. This allows you to create the right ambience for your project.
The first dial adjusts the colour temperature between cool and warm, and the second adjusts the brightness. You can turn them to adjust manually (they have a nice tactile click) or you can press in the dials in to quickly increase or decrease the brightness and colour temperature in preset increments.
You can also control the light remotely using an app called ZY Vega which allows you to adjust these settings using your phone connected using Bluetooth. The app is available for iPhone and Android.
There are several handy presets in the app such as Tungsten Lamp, Modelling Light, Dysprosium Lamp and Xenon Lamp. And there are various filter options (based on both Tungsten Lamp and Dysprosium Lamp).
And if you have multiple lights, the app can control them all in sync.
Zhiyun G60 accessories
G60 works with a range of top-quality optional accessories, including larger diffused reflectors, mini softboxes and Bowens mount adapters. These accessories use Zhiyun’s simple and secure lock and release system and can be purchased separately or as part of kit bundles.
In the box of the recommended Combo bundle you get the light, a mini reflector, a Bowens mounting kit to use the light with larger softboxes, a small Zhiyun softbox, a dome diffuser to spread the light around a room, a DC adapter charging brick and a protective carrying case.
There is no battery power supply. The G60 gets its juice from either the included DC adapter or by using the 100W PD USB-C power port.
If connecting using the latter, then the supply affects how bright the light can go. In other words, you need a 100W charging brick to get 100 percent brightness. If you use a 65w charging brick with the USB-C port, you will only get 65 percent brightness.
You can use the light with the supplied mini tripod or with a larger light stand.
It has a small adjustable tilt stand and by attaching a 1/4in to 3/8in adapter you can easily mount the G60 on a standard lighting stand to position it exactly how you want it. You can use it angled vertically upwards or in a decline, for example.
Zhiyun G60 verdict
My only quibble would be the lack of colour filters, but it’s an issue you can overlook as the G60 has so much else going for it.
Subjects are lit in a natural and flattering way with excellent colour accuracy.
Zhiyun Molus G60 is simple to use, it’s functional and it’s versatile.
