A quarter of adults over 65 are keen to improve their use of technology and embrace modern devices. However, research has found many are concerned about online privacy and the large inital costs.
According to a recent study, 4 in 10 say the fast in which technology advances makes it difficult to keep up with what is new.
The study also found that over a third would lack confidence in setting up a piece of technology, and 27% fear they wouldn’t know how to operate it once set up. Despite these worries, 53% believe that technology could simplify their lives.
A remarkable 78% agree that smart meters could be beneficial by providing automated meter readings and precise billing, while 34% think a smartwatch could help monitor their health more effectively.
Overall, 85% recognise that technology can save time and money and provide an easy means to keep in touch with loved ones.
The research was commissioned by Smart Energy GB, who have partnered with Toyah Willcox to share her experiences with new technology.
The singer-songwriter and actress highlighted how the rapid evolution of technology makes it challenging to adapt to one product before another emerges.
She said: “Sometimes I have concerns and then realise they were unfounded, like with my smart meter – I actually found it very easy to use.”
To cope with the evolving tech landscape, Toyah emphasizes the importance of research, stating: “I do a lot of research, like speaking to friends and family, to help me decide which devices will be simple to use and make my life easier.”
Interestingly, the study revealed that three-quarters of respondents rely on younger individuals to assist them with tech-related issues.
A spokesperson for Smart Energy GB noted: “Not all tech necessarily makes life easier. But some gadgets and devices, like smart meters, are intuitive and user-friendly, crafted with simplicity in mind so that everyone can benefit, however tech savvy you might be.”
