Calangute police recovered 53 stolen phones since Jan | Goa News


Calangute: Since the beginning of the year, Calangute police have recovered 53 cellphones worth over Rs 10 lakh belonging to tourists.
Calangute PI Paresh Naik said they have been receiving a large number of complaints from tourists visiting that their mobiles were lost or were missing. Of the 53 phones recovered, 44 were handed over to the owner by following the procedure.
During the peak Christmas-New Year season, around 100 mobile phones had been recovered.
In late December, Calangute police had busted two inter-state gangs of mobile thieves with the arrest of 24 persons from Maharashtra at Baga, all of whom had come to Goa to steal mobile phones from tourists. Police had recovered 41 phones from them, most of them Apple iPhones.
On New Year’s eve, 12 more mobile thieves had been nabbed and 55 phones recovered from them. In April, Calangute police arrested Sachin Kumar, 19, a resident of Baga, for allegedly committing theft of 12 mobile phones belonging to tourists.
In the first week of June, two persons were found with 11 mobile phones worth Rs 1.3 lakh. During investigations the accused disclosed that they have committed theft of the said phones from Baga beach.
