Charlie Day Schools NFL star DK Metcalf in New Hulu + Live TV Ad

The Hulu + Live TV Acting Academy is officially open.

Today, Hulu launched its fall campaign to promote Hulu + Live TV—the live streaming platform that features more than 95 live channels and access to Hulu’s complete on-demand library, Disney+ and ESPN+ all in one plan. To kick things off, the streamer enlisted It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star Charlie Day and Seattle Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf.

In the 30-second spot, which was created with Known and produced with Riverside Entertainment, sports and entertainment literally collide as Day teaches Metcalf how to act in a Hulu commercial that highlights the many features Hulu + Live TV has to offer.

“Hulu and I have history,” Metcalf told ADWEEK. “For our second time around, it only felt right that we rekindled this relationship.”

Metcalf previously starred in Hulu + Live TV’s “Flip Like Cable” spot in 2021, which featured the football player on the field, but this is the first time he’s worked with Day on a campaign where he pretends to be an actor.

“Working with Charlie this time was a great experience,” Metcalf said. “I got some great pointers from him. Off camera, he was just a good dude with great energy.”

Day said working with Hulu on the campaign was a no-brainer for him since It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and his directorial debut, Fool’s Paradise, are on the streaming service.

“Hulu was certainly flattering, and for the campaign, they said DK represents all sports and I represent all entertainment, so who could turn that down?” Day said. “Most importantly for me, anytime someone comes to me with a campaign is, ‘Does it seem like fun? Does it seem funny?’ And I thought the spot was hilarious, and it was exciting to meet DK.”

Day said he hopes the campaign will bring more subscribers to Hulu.

“It’s great they offer livestreaming sports,” Day said. “That’s one of the last things keeping people hanging on to their cable subscription. It will just bring more eyeballs to the Hulu service. That’s more people who could potentially watch It’s Always Sunny. It’s great they’re doing it.”
