ENTERPRISE, Ala. (WTVY) – The Enterprise City Council is discussing the drainage issues in the Valley Chase and Legends Trail subdivisions.
A week ago, News4 broke this story about two homeowners dealing with drainage and sewage issues to their homes.
This week, Director of Public Works Barry Mott met with the city council to inform them about the history of the adjacent neighborhoods and talk about how the drainage became a problem.
These adjacent subdivisions were built in 2006 by private contractors, and 10 years later were handed over to the city when the owners went bankrupt.
There was a 20-foot drainage easement that was installed between the two subdivisions, however, when the city took over the neighborhood, it did not accept responsibility for maintaining the easement, leaving its ownership in question.
Now, with accessory structures like pools built inside the easement, the drainage could be getting clogged, making flooding issues worse for the homeowners.
“The city never adopted that drainage easement behind the house, therefore it’s not a city responsibility to maintain that,” said Mott. “However, we do want to do what we can to help the citizens.
“The time to resolve the issue was when the subdivisions were originally built. Now that you have houses built and finished floors established, and roads and driveways already done, going back in now and trying to resolve this issue will affect many property owners through there.”
There is no plan set in motion yet, but Mott hopes to meet with the people affected and talk about the next steps.
