Illinois Department of Transportation officials discuss Thanksgiving roadway fatalities
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WICS) —
More people died on Illinois highways this Thanksgiving travel period.
Fourteen people died during the four days, up from 10 last year.
With the Christmas holiday travel period authorities are warning drivers to be careful.
We take a closer look at what drivers need to know.
This year’s total is the highest it’s been since 2020.
That year 17 people died.
Illinois Department of Transportation officials don’t want to repeat those statistics.
The best way to do so, protect yourself by following the rules of the road, including wearing your seatbelt whenever you’re driving or a passenger.
“Always remember to buckle up. It’s not only the law in Illinois, it’s your best defense. If you’re in a crash. Pay attention. Don’t drive distracted. Watch your speed. don’t drive impaired,” said IDOT spokesperson Paul Wappel, “If you’re going to drink, you know, designate a driver to do that. But plan extra time for your trip.”
Wappel said drivers need to avoid what’s known as the fatal four traffic violations.
Driving without a seatbelt, driving impaired, driving while distracted, and speeding.
IDOT also wants motorists to be aware of road work and to always slow down when they’re in a work zone.
