Man caught for making fake claim about iPhone in Kulai

KULAI: A 24-year-old man was arrested for making a false claim of buying a smartphone worth more than RM7,000 at a premises at Indahpura.

Acting Kulai OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said the incident occurred last Friday (June 9) at 5.30pm when the suspect approached one of the workers at the mobile phone shop.

“The suspect claimed that he had bought an iPhone 14 Pro Max worth RM7,350 and managed to convince the store worker that he had paid a deposit worth RM500 and a payment of RM6,850,” he said.

“The suspect had shown a fake online payment receipt that read that the payment was allegedly made to the shop’s account,” he added in a statement on Sunday (June 11).

Supt Yusof added that after conducting an inspection, the worker found that there was no transaction made to the shop account and said that the worker then lodged a police report.

“A team was then deployed to a supermarket in Taman Sutra, where the suspect was arrested on Saturday (June 10) at 2pm,” he said.

“The police have also confiscated a fake iPhone and the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the suspect’s clothing,” he said, adding that a background check revealed that the suspect had five prior cases in his criminal record.

The suspect is currently under remand until June 14, and the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property, which carries a maximum of 10 years imprisonment, a fine or both upon conviction.
