MSCI adds Global Unichip, Wistron to global standard indexes

Taipei, May 12 (CNA) Two Taiwanese tech stocks have been included in the MSCI Global Standard Indexes in MSCI Inc.’s latest quarterly index review, according to a statement released Friday.

In the statement, the global index provider said one of the stocks was Global Unichip Corp. (GUC), an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC) design company that is a subsidiary of contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC).

The other Taiwanese stock added to the index was contract electronics maker Wistron Corp., according to MSCI, which also said that both Winstron and GUC had been removed from the MSCI Global Small Cap Indexes.

Commenting on the report, market analysts said the inclusion of GUC and Wistron in the MSCI Global Standard Indexes reflected the gains in the companies’ share prices and an increase in their market capitalization in recent trading sessions.

Meanwhile, nine Taiwanese stocks were added to the MSCI Global Small Cap Indexes, including electric machinery supplier Fortune Electric Corp., BMW’s Taiwan sales agent Pan German Universal Motors Ltd., power management solutions provider Phihong Technology Co., Shihlin Electric & Engineering Corp., and communication services provider Unizyx Holding Corp.

The other four were electronics component Waffer Technology Corp., IC testing interface provider WinWay Technology Co., restaurant chain owner Wowprime Corp., and Yankey Engineering Co.

Two other Taiwanese companies, apart from GUC and Wistron, were removed from the MSCI Global Small Cap Indexes, namely office automation device supplier Aurora Corp. and food brand Taisun Enterprise Co.

The adjustments are scheduled take effect after the stock market closes on May 31, MSCI said.

MSCI index reviews are conducted in February, May, August and November each year.
