New Open AI and Google platforms up the ante on race for supremacy in artificial intelligence

The artificial intelligence platform wars escalated this week with major new releases from Microsoft-backed Open-AI and Google.

pen AI’s GPT-4, which powers ChatGPT, was released and will be capable of processing up to 25,000 words, about eight times more than before. The updated system, which is available via an API, can also use pictures and images as prompts, returning recipes and completed website code based on photos of food or sketches of website suggestions.

However, Irish AI experts warn that GPT-4 may still have gaps.

“There is already some evidence that there remain holes,” said Neil Brady, co-founder of Caliber AI. Speaking on The Big Tech Show podcast, Mr Brady said that it will be a while before such AI systems are totally reliable.

Meanwhile, Google announced a range of enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) features and services for Gmail, Google Docs and its other ‘Workspace’ products.

Soon, users will be able to prompt entire paragraphs or documents just by entering a topic. It’s a scaling up of existing features such as ‘smart reply’ prompts and it comes amid  intense competition with rival services such as Open AI’s Chat GPT.

“You can simply type in a topic you’d like to write about, and a draft will be instantly generated for you,” the company said in its announcement.

“Whether you’re a busy HR professional who needs to create customised job descriptions, or a parent drafting the invitation for your child’s pirate-themed birthday party, Workspace saves you the time and effort of writing that first version.”

The system won’t just use a series of boilerplates, the company added.

“Finding the right tone and style can also be tricky at times. Perhaps you’re applying for a new job, or writing to a new supplier in a more traditional industry, and you need to adopt a more formal tone in your email. Or you’ve jotted down a few bullets on your phone from a recent meeting and want to transform them into a more polished summary to share with your team. For these common scenarios and many more, we’re adding new generative Al capabilities to help you rewrite.”

The tech giant also unveiled a number of further AI features for its workspace apps, including auto-generated images, audio and video in Slides, as well as raw data to insights or analysis via auto completion  in Sheets.
