A wounded civilian is helped to safety after a Russian bombing attack in Chechnya that killed 18 people, including American photographer Cynthia Elbaum. In December 1994, Russian troops entered Chechnya to quash the country’s independence movement. Initial promises of a quick victory were soon challenged by fierce Chechen resistance, leading to a death toll estimated at up to 100,000, many of them civilians, over the 20-month war that followed.
