UNESCO and Huawei Boost Education in Ethiopia with Tech Donation

In a collaborative effort, UNESCO and Huawei have contributed to the advancement of education in Ethiopia through the Technology-enabled Open School Systems for All project (TeOSS). This initiative, part of Huawei’s TECH4ALL program, has been operational in Ethiopia, Egypt, and Ghana since 2020, with a recent donation ceremony held at the Ethiopian Ministry of Education.

Under the TeOSS project, which concludes this year, 480 tablets, 48 access points, and 24 smart boards were presented to 24 secondary schools in various Ethiopian regions. Ayelech Eshete, State Minister for the Ministry of Education in Ethiopia, expressed gratitude, stating, “It will enable them to explore diverse educational resources, expand their knowledge beyond textbooks, and connect with a vast global network of information and learning experiences.”

The donated equipment aligns with the broader goals of TeOSS, aiming to bridge the digital divide, enhance education inclusivity, and promote equity by empowering educators and institutions. Dr. Rita Bissoonauth, Director of UNESCO Liaison Office to AU, UNECA, emphasized the significance of this milestone, noting that selected schools can now integrate technology into classrooms, fostering enhanced learning, collaboration, and skills development.

The three-year TeOSS project in Ethiopia focuses on ICT infrastructure development, teacher and student training, and the creation of a Learning Management System integrated with a Teacher Training Platform. This comprehensive approach aims to establish crisis-resilient school systems, ensuring learning continuity in normal and crisis conditions.

Since its initiation in 2020, the project has undergone assessment and design processes in Ethiopia, Egypt, and Ghana, with plans to expand its impact across Africa. The partnership between UNESCO and Huawei reflects the commitment of the Ethiopian government to empower students and citizens in the digital era, preparing them for future challenges and opportunities.
