A QUARTER of drivers leave their car running unattended while de-icing the windscreen, a poll has revealed.
And one in five said they had left their car unlocked while they quickly ran an errand.
But insurer Aviva, which commissioned the survey, warned that most policies would not cover theft in those situations.
A fifth also admitted driving without their windscreen being fully clear of snow or ice.
Aviva motor claims manager Martin Smith said: “Never leave your car unattended with the engine on or keys in the ignition either.
“If you do, you might not be able to claim on your insurance in the unfortunate event your car is stolen.
“All drivers are legally required to ensure their vehicle is roadworthy, which includes keeping windscreens, mirrors and numberplates free from snow, leaves, debris, ice and dirt.
“While we all want to reach our destinations quickly, safety should come first, especially as the risk of accidents tends to increase during periods of adverse weather.”
Drivers have also been warned over “cheap hacks” used to de-ice windscreens as temperatures plummet – as they could cost hundreds.
One popular trick is to pour boiling water over the frosted windscreen.
Expert Ed Colley said: “The sudden change in temperature can cause the glass to rapidly expand.
“It could result in small chips in the windscreen growing into larger and much more damaging cracks.”
